Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy and former newsreader Dermot Murnaghan share a diagnosis of stage four prostate cancer and have been supporting each other through their respective treatments. 

Following his own diagnosis in late 2023, Sir Chris contacted Dermot after learning of his similar diagnosis and situation, providing him with guidance and a crucial call of support. 

Dermot said: “It (the call) was a mental lifeline. Numb with shock, pretty much unable to speak, I found myself listening to a calm, mellifluous Scottish brogue talking me through my own identical diagnosis, based on his experience."

Last weekend, the two participated in Hoy's charity bike ride, Tour De 4, which raises funds for cancer charities and seeks to change perceptions around terminal cancer.
